Gandhi House & Press
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma comes from Sanskrit word meaning Great Soul, in English it could also be translated as Saint. Gandhi doesn't need an introduction majority of the people all around the world knows him as nonviolent, respectful human being. Everyone knows that Gandhi was born in India and played a big role in Indian freedom, but the majority of the people don't know that he lived 21 years of his life in South Africa's suburb in Durban. His house in Durban Since than has become a tourist attraction. The house is named Sarvodaya its also Sanskrit word meaning Universal Uplift or Progress of All. The house was originally built for Gandhi and his family when the Phoenix settlement of Durban was established in 1904. The house was since then reconstructed at the same place because the original house which was built mostly of wood and bamboo was burnt down during 1985 Inanda Riots. Gandhi also founded a newspaper known as Indian Opinion which was printed at International Printing Press. This newspaper came into existence in 1903 and continued publication until 1961. You can still visit his house and printing press in Durban.
